A custom clock could be just what you need to add that unique touch to your home. No matter what your style is, you can design a clock to match it. With so many customizable features, the possibilities are almost infinite. We build custom clocks for both indoor and outdoor placement. And while many exterior decor options offer seasonal challenges, clocks are great year-round.
6 Ways To Customize A Clock
There are many ways to make a clock your own. As you begin to gather quotes for a custom clock, here are several things you’ll want to consider:
Where to Put A Clock?
On a post, or on a wall, a Lumichron clock can provide a focal point to any outdoor space. Add a clock to a cupola or wall or place a post clock in your garden garden. We’ve even created a clock that doubles as a window.
What Type of Clock?
Where the clock will go helps determine which type of clock to choose. A enclosed case clock is a great option for your home exterior. A skeletal clock, with face and hands directly on the wall, a post clock for your yard or garden, or a multi-face tower clock are also great options for a home.
What Size Clock?
When designing a custom clock, you want to make sure the size is appropriate for the viewing distance as well as for the available space. If you provide us with a photo or drawing, we can digitally add a clock image to scale. Case clocks and skeletal clocks are custom-built to any size. Most post clocks are standard sizes, with faces approximately 24-inch to 30-inch diameter and overall height ranging from 10-feet to 15-feet.
Choosing a Dial Design
The hands and dial set the tone for the style of your clock. Choose from traditional Roman numerals with ornate hands, Arabic dials with straight or block hands, or a modern dial with only graphic elements to designate the hours. Check out our hand and dial selector for options and inspiration. We can create custom dials as well, for example, if you would like to add a name or date.
LED Illumination
Exterior clocks usually always include dial illumination. We use long-lasting sign-grade LED lights, placed for even illumination. If you choose an automatic clock controller not only does it keep track of the time, self-correcting for daylight savings and power interruptions, it also turns the illumination on at dusk and off at dawn. And, as the days get shorter, the lights come on earlier. The LEDs come in a variety of white color temperatures, from warm to cool, so you can choose the one that best suits your clock.
Can you picture your new clock? At Lumichron, we can build a clock to complete your home.

Bringing A Personalized Outdoor Clock To Life
Last September, Arnold Young contacted us to make a custom clock for his Detroit area home. He planned to mount it outside, on the upper story of the house. He had a clear vision for what he wanted, and we helped him to bring his idea to life.
Custom Clock Specifications
Mr. Young selected a 36-inch diameter clock, which is installed on the surface of exterior wall, with a conduit for low-voltage wiring to the inside. It fits in a perfect spot on the front of the house, on the second story for good visibility. The clock is contained in a 36” diameter x 7” deep all-aluminum fully-enclosed case, with an architectural-grade powdercoat finish in dark bronze. A tempered glass crystal covers the face; which features a Roman C dial with custom text, “Time is Tight.” The translucent polycarbonate dial and dial design of applied cast vinyl are both UV-protected for long-lasting color retention. The MV-style hour and minute hands complement the Roman numerals on the dial. The clock has a Mobatime NU-90t minute-impulse clock movement, which moves only once per minute, powered by a fully automatic primary controller (Mobatime’s HN-60) which resets the display clock after power outages and Daylight Saving Time without any manual intervention. The HN-60 also controls illumination – on at dusk, off at dawn. A GPS antenna ensures absolute time accuracy.
Clock Delivery
Since most of the clocks we build are shipped to a jobsite for the contractor or owner to install, it’s unusual for us to meet our customers in person. But, Mr. Young lives close enough that he could drive to Lumichron in just a few hours. So he opted to pick up his completed clock, rather than have it shipped.
We enjoyed the opportunity to meet Mr. Young and his wife, and shared their delight upon seeing the completed clock in person. After a tour of our clock shop, they set off for home with the clock carefully stowed in the back seat of their car.
Outdoor Clock Installation
Mr. Young has access to the interior wall behind where the clock would be mounted. This made it simple to install an electrical conduit for the clock. The primary controller sits inside. A low-voltage line goes through the wall to power the clock movement and the illumination. A special 2-part cleat system holds the clock securely in place. This same cleat system has held Lumichron clocks in place during hurricanes. So the Youngs can be confident the clock will stand up to Detroit weather for years to come!
Also: we warranty all our clocks, and provide unlimited free 24/7 tech support.
A Neighborhood Beacon
Since the clock has graced the front of the Young’s home, they say they have received many positive comments from friends and neighbors. A glowing report for sure!
